Most cooks have a selection of cook books or at least cooking magazines they use for a variety of reasons.  Some people follow the recipes verbatim without considerable variation and some people use the recipes as general guidelines.

I am a general guidelines cook, however, I have used The Joy of Cooking as a cooking encyclopedia rather than a cook book since day one of our 33 year marriage.

I was so impressed with this book, which we received as a wedding present, we have given the Joy of Cooking as a wedding present to every couple getting married that we have known.

I am one of those people who believe the more you understand about what your doing, the better chance you will have on doing a good job.  This cookbook explains ingredients, cooking methods, cooking times and temperatures.  If I only had one cook book, I would want it to be the Joy of Cooking, not only because it has great recipes but because it is fun to read as well.
